Police disperse anti-sculpture rally
Police on Friday charged batons and dispersed a rally brought out near the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Juma prayers protesting against the erection of sculptures and harassment of Hefazat-e-Islam leader Mamunul Haque.
Police also detained around 20 madrassah students and mosque-goers from the protest rally after dispersing it.
Officer-in-charge of Paltan police station Abu Bakar Siddique said that they have detained 15 people from the protest rally while Ramna police said they have detained five protesters.
Abu Bakar said they were yet to decide whether any charge would be brought against the detainees.
Witness said, more than thousand mosque-goers and students brought out the protest rally after the prayer.
Police tried to stop it by locking the gates of the mosque. The protestors broke up the gates and stormed out from the mosque to the streets. The agitated mosque-goers and madrassah students were chanting slogans against the erection of sculptures and harassment of Hefazat joint secretary-general Mamunul.
The Hefazat leader has been facing criticism from the ruling party and many other organisations for the last few days after his comments against the planned erection of sculptures of country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Mamunul had to cancel his scheduled programme at Hathazari Madrassah in Chattogram in the face of resistance from ruling party student organisation Chhatra League.
