Ema Datshi (ཨེ་མ་དར་ཚིལ་) is a type of datshi, cheese based soups eaten all over Bhutan, and also some parts of North eastern India. Ema Datshi comes from Ema which means chili pepper, and Datshi meaning cheese. This dish is so popular in Bhutan that it has earned the status of a national dish in the country. In Bhutan Ema Datshi is served with red rice that is mostly grown in the Paro valley. Besides Ema datshi, people also eat Kewa Datshi (potato datshi), Shamu Datshi (mushroom datshi).

In Calcutta we were introduced to Ema Datshi at The Blue Poppy, Sikkim House Calcutta (they also have a two more branches in Lake Town and Sector 3) by our friend food and travel blogger, Poorna (check out her blog at http://www.presentedbyp.com/).
