Description :
Thanks to its ideal position between mountains and lake, to the arcades, churches and chapels and to its idyllic park, Morcote has been chosen as the "most beautiful village in Switzerland 2016".
The town is located on the shores of Lake Lugano, south of Lugano, 15 minutes from it by car or 30 minutes by boat. Part of the boundary of the municipal territory on the lake marks the Italian-Swiss border.
The particularity of Morcote is to be a village divided into two parts: one profane, on the edge of the lake, and the other ecclesial, on the heights. Both are displayed in a monumental way.
Along the shore, many stately homes such as the Paleari Palace stand alongside simple buildings. With their sumptuous arcades, the facades of the houses bordering the lake are one of the most striking distinctive signs of Morcote. Just behind unfolds the maze of cobbled streets in the center of the town, whose medieval origin is still visible today.
From there, a spectacular Stations of the Cross with some 400 steps leads to the pilgrimage church of Santa Maria del Sasso. A fountain and several oratories accompany the climb. At the top, the church sits above the village like a patron saint. Next to it is an octagonal chapel and a monumental cemetery where international celebrities are buried. In the pilgrimage church, visitors can admire frescoes dating from several eras, a beautiful stone dome and an organ built around 1700.
In Morcote there is also an exotic curiosity: the "Parco Scherrer", once laid out by the St. Gallen fabric merchant Arthur Scherrer. In this botanical park with subtropical vegetation flourish palm trees, camellias, cypresses, bamboo and many other fragrant plants. The park is open to the public and also serves as a setting for cultural and artistic events.
How to reach Morcote?
Morcote can easily be reached by car, bike or bus, in around 30-40 minutes from Lugano. But if you really wanna soak up every inch of the unique Swiss landscape, then take the funicular from Paradiso to reach Mount San Salvatore and hike to Morcote from there: The route is the perfect combination of stunning views and sunny pathways, lush greenery and the typical alpine grandeur.
Steeped in rich culture and endless lakeside beauty, it’s easy to see why the Ticinese village Morcote was voted the most beautiful Swiss village in 2016. This lakeside paradise, also called the Pearl of Ceresio, is just 12.9 km from Lugano, one of the biggest cities and upcoming digital nomad destination of the canton, and can be easily reached via bus or car. There is indeed no reason to not leave the city behind and visit the most photographed villages in Switzerland!
