In 1822, a man called Alexis St Martin was accidentally shot in his torso at a general store in Michigan. His life-threatening injury introduced him to Dr William Beaumont, a local army surgeon who later became a conductor of unethical human experiments.
Dr Jason Karlawish, a physician and the author of Open Wound: The Tragic Obsession of Dr. William Beaumont, reveals how their unlikely relationship serves as a 'cautionary tale' for modern physician-scientists.
