90 Year Old Ice Cream Maker Restoration
Will it still make ice cream?
Restoration of a very old White Mountain Freezer hand-cranked ice cream maker.
White Mountain has been making ice cream makers since 1853. This style was patented in 1923 and this particular machine was made sometime in the 20s or 30s. The mechanisms are made of cast steel. The bucket is made of New England White Pine and painted with milk paint.
Here is a link that explains milk paint: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk_paint
The 4 quart container and the mixers and lid are all tin-plated. The tin has worn in a few places, which is where the rust was coming from, and the whole thing needs to be re-tinned.
This restoration took about 3 weeks. The ice cream only took about 15 minutes of churning.
