The fires of motorsport competition were born with pretty much only two reasons. Firstly because people who love cars often love speed and trying to go faster in cars, even back when “fast” meant 20mph. Secondly to increase the rate of technological change in cars. The latter has produced some incredible machines, through homologation specials and plenty of hidden technological advances found on your every day road car.

While aerodynamic advances are the most obvious advances that trickle down from motorsport to road cars, it’s often under the bonnet where the biggest advances have been found. In fact some cars don’t just go out with some trick new cylinder head linings developed from a season in F1, some are just fitted with the racing engine and then rolled out onto public roads. This has lead to some of the most powerful and mightiest cars ever to see the light of day, from American muscle cars to Ferraris descended from F1 cars. Here are eight that were truly great.
