Many cameras have the ability to shoot flat or in a log profile. Like the GH4 with the V-Log. But how does it work when using a LUT?

Everyone talks these days about using LUT's and how it's so great. But what exactly is so great about it? Well, so start with a LUT will alter the colors and exposure of your video. A reason could be to give your footage a different look. But also to make your flat image look "normal" again.

This flat image is something we can record in. You either set your camera profile to a very low contrast or you select a log profile if your camera can do that. The Sony cameras are famous for their slog profile and the Panasonic camera are known for their V-log profiles.

Even smaller cameras like the Lumix GH4 has the ability to shoot in that V-log profile. But when you do so, you will notice it's extremely flat and unusable for delivery. You'll have to add that contrast in post to make the clip look better again.

The advantage of applying your contrast in post rather than in camera is that the flat image is in the source. So if you wish to recover any highlights or shadows, you could do that.
