Taughannock Falls State Park is located in Ulysses, New York, in the popular Finger Lakes Region of central New York. The falls are a famous feature of Taughannock State Park and a popular destination for Finger Lakes area travel. Taughannock Falls cataract has an incredible drop of 215 feet (66 meters), and is one of the highest east of the Rocky Mountains. The park is located 8 miles Northwest of the city of Ithaca and 3 miles Southeast of the Village of Trumansburg. Taughannock State Park has expanded to 750 acres from it's original 64 acres in 1925. It features hiking and nature trails, tent and trailer sites, cabin rentals, several picnic areas, beach swimming, fishing, playground areas, and a marina launch site to Cayuga Lake with kayak rentals. Winter activities include ice-skating, sledding, cross-country skiing and in summer an annual concert series. Other interesting area attractions from ten minutes to an hours drive include: Buttermilk Falls, Robert Treman State Park, Cornell Botanical Gardens, Watkins Glen, Corning Glass Museum, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art and over 50 local wineries.

The falls are formed by a rock bed creek entering the lake and surrounded by a glen with walls climbing to 400 feet (120 meters). The cataract has a drop of 215 feet (66 meters), one of the highest east of the Rocky Mountains slightly higher even (25 ft., 8 m) than Niagara (American side), but they cannot be compared because it has much smaller volume. Taughannock is interesting year round - the falls and gorge create a natural amphitheater with dense spray rising from the bottom often shrouding the lower part of the cataract in mist. The name "Taughannock" originates either from that of the Delaware Indian chief Taughannock or as the Delaware word taghkanic ("great fall in the woods").
