Lea Bridge Road came to life after the building of the bridge across the River Lea in 1745, and Mill Lane became Lea Bridge Road. On the Leyton side from Markhouse Road to Bakers Arms had been called Butterfield Lane. The creation of a turnpike road linking Clapton to the Eagle at Snaresbrook resulted in the modern-day Lea Bridge Road - one of the great thoroughfares of London.
Our walk takes in some of the notable sites in the lower section of the road. Lea Bridge Library, was funded by Andrew Carnegie and opened in 1905. The abandoned football ground of Leyton F.C. The club was formed in 1868 in the early years of Association Football and went through various incarnations before going out of business in 2011. The pitch is currently being used as a car park. There's a campaign to save the ground https://chng.it/h7CLyXMCRf
A glorious old art deco cinema sits at the junction of Church Road and Lea Bridge Road. Opened in 1928 as The Savoy, it went through a number of incarnations over the years. It became the Gaumont in 1950 then the Curzon in 1964, Odeon in 1967, and finally the Classic in ‘73. It's now a gospel church. We cross the Dagenham Brook and admire the houses of the Warner Estate and the magnificent Borough of Leyton Electricity substation. We then encounter the new Motion development of flats that created three large tower blocks looming over Lea Bridge Road. At the new Lea Bridge Station, I remember the day it re-opened in 2016 and for the train enthusiasts amongst you may spot a well-known YouTuber amongst the crowds on the platform.
Our walk along Lea Bridge Road passes the East London waterworks and the Lea Valley Ice Centre which is currently being rebuilt and is due to re-open later in 2022. We finish at the Lea Bridge itself beside the River Lea on the border with Hackney.
