When it comes to the upper chest, there are 4 things you can start doing right away that will have an immediate impact on your max strength.

First let's cover basic chest prioritization first:

First: hit chest earlier in the workout.
Second: Tally up roughly how many sets of chest you’re hitting per week right now. Once you’ve got the proper techniques handled, then you can start adding one or two sets per week over the next month or two as you assess your progress, working your way up through the 12-20 set “optimal zone”.
Third: Increase frequency. If you’re currently only hitting your chest once per week on Monday, start hitting it twice per week.

Step 1: Modify Your Bench Press Technique

The first modification is to use slightly lighter weights for higher reps. The second way we want to modify our bench technique is by bringing our grip slightly in. Even though you won’t be able to move as much weight this way, if you’re more concerned with developing your upper chest, a closer grip will likely hit the upper fibers better.

Step 2: Add More Incline Presses

The reason I’m using dumbbells over barbells here is that you will be able to get a bit more range of motion with the extra stretch at the bottom: so the short comings of the barbell press are overcome by also including dumbbells. A cue I like to use on the incline press to drive upper chest focus is to keep the elbows moderately tucked and think about pressing the dumbbells up and back toward your face, rather than just straight up.

Step 3: Incorporate more non-traditional exercises

The reverse grip bench press, band press and banded push-ups are the three movements we can consider including. I’m personally a bit more wary of the guillotine press as it just feels too risky to me, so I’d stick with the banded push up and the banded incline press for higher reps in the 15-20 range to see if you feel them working your upper chest.

Step 4: Fill in further volume with isolation work

I like low to high cable flyes. While dumbbell flyes can be effective for really stretching out the pecs at the bottom, they lose tension at the top. When pulling the cables from low to high, you can mimic the exact orientation of the clavicular fibers, which also run low to high. You might feel this in your front delts (and that’s ok) but if you really focus on the mind-muscle connection and actively squeezing your pecs together, you should feel your upper pecs contracting the most.

I think the question that has been asked the most of me during my time on YouTube is which YouTubers do I watch, myself? In this video, I am going to go over the list of the fitness YouTubers (and other YouTubers) that I like to watch in my free time. You might be surprised by some of the people that show up on this list and you may get a little more understanding of who Jeff Cavaliere is outside of ATHLEAN-X.

Before I kick off this list, I have to disclose that my viewing tastes are not limited just to fitness YouTubers. It may come as a shock that I have other interests as well! Music, motivation, and wrestling to name a few.

To kick off the list, I have start with someone who has a love and appreciation for science just like I do, and that is Andrew Huberman. A Stanford University researcher who has spent much of his time providing actionable and helpful advice that is all based in scientific reasoning. I find myself learning something new every video that he puts out.

A colleague in the medical field puts out videos where he breaks down high profile sports injuries almost immediately after they happen and offers insight into how and why they occurred and the steps that you, as a viewer, can take to avoid similar injuries. I think Brian Sutterer MD is an excellent resource for understanding injuries for athletes.

As you can probably tell, I love learning when I watch YouTube videos and I feel like I always have an opportunity to learn when I watch Bright Side. I also like to watch this channel with my sons because I feel like they are learning valuable information outside of the classroom in a fun, engaging style that also lets me learn a little something knew every now and then.

With a lot of YouTube fitness personalities focused on bringing you exercise tips and workouts, there leaves room for entertainment. I don’t think anyone in the YouTube fitness space is as hilarious or entertaining as Bro-Science Life. Dom Mazzetti has a way of making me laugh with every video that he puts out regardless of how outlandish the content is.

I find that the best form of motivation comes in the form of a kick in the ass from an in your face personality. I don’t think anybody fits that bill better than my friend CT Fletcher. Every time I need that little extra juice in the tank to get going through a workout, all I have to do is turn on one of CT’s videos and I find myself pushing that much harder.

While he doesn’t have a YouTube channel himself, it is hard to find a motivational video in the fitness space without hearing him speak. David Goggins is another master motivator that I turn to when I need some extra encouragement to get my head on straight for a workout. When a former Navy SEAL is telling you how to be “hard”, it’s tough not to listen!

When it comes to teaching, I have a lot of respect for people that can provide valuable, actionable information that just down right makes sense, especially when it comes to strength training. There are not many out there that do it better than the guys at EliteFTS, but specifically Swede Burns. I just find myself always taking away something new and gravitating towards his teaching style.

Back to entertainment, Harry Mack is someone that I find very engaging. I can’t help but get drawn in by his man-on-the-street approach to his videos, as well as his ability to freestyle using a random collection of words provided by video participants. Every single time I watch, I am impressed!

It’s hard to argue that the guest list that Joe Rogan has put together over the years isn’t impressive. The diversity of participants means that just about every episode you watch is going to have something new and fresh, with plenty to be learned. I love being exposed to new thoughts and ideas on interesting topics that I may not have considered without watching in the first place.

As someone who appreciates applied science, I can also appreciate the research that goes into it. I also appreciate when someone is able to read and break down that research for viewers to understand and I think that Jeff Nippard does a great job of this. Making the literature understandable for the viewer is highly valuable when it comes to YouTube fitness.

I like to think of maingaining as a type of body recomposition where your goal is to maintain your bodyweight while gaining strength, and ideally, some muscle mass as well. For me that usually comes toward the end of an extended bulk, before starting a cut, but you can always just ride the maingain or recomp wave as long as it's working for you. I think it's better done at a moderate to slightly higher bodyfat percentage, in the 10-20% zone as a male or the 20-30% zone as a female. The closer you are to your natural genetic ceiling, the more necessary bulking phases become to add muscular size and the more you'll probably want to maingain at the slightly higher end of the bodyfat range, assuming your main goal is to make lean gains in strength and size.

How HARD Should You Workout? (Response To Jeff Nippard Video)

In today's video I'm giving my thoughts to a recent video posted by Jeff Nippard entitled "How Hard Should You Train To Build Muscle (The Truth)".

In that video Jeff Nippard interviews 5 other top experts in the field: Mike Israetel (Renaissance Periodization), Jon Meadows, Stefi Cohen, Eric Helms (3DMJ) and Greg Nuckols (Stronger By Science).

The interviews are centered around this one fundamental question: just how hard should you workout to build muscle optimally?

Should you train to failure? Is it better to leave reps in the tank? How hard should you train exactly in terms of RIR (reps in reserve) and RPE (rating of perceived exertion)?

Greg Doucette also did a response video ("How Hard Should You Train??? || HARDER THAN LAST TIME!!!") in which he gives his thoughts on the issue of training intensity as well.

In my video I'll be going through the various responses given by each expert and will be giving my own commentary, and then I'll finish off with my own answer to the question of how hard you should workout to build muscle.

A few notes/updates on the diet:
- Keep in mind that the numbers presented are rough ball-park averages. They won't work out perfectly because they don't map to the individual perfectly.
- In the Fundamentals Nutrition Series (coming soon!), I will go into more detail and use examples to illustrate concepts better.
- The informative segment was done totally off the cuff. I wish I used 0.5-1.5% bodyfat per week which would have captured the fact that for many people, a slower rate of loss like 0.5%/week is ideal. Again, it's individual and depends on your goal but this is a good place to start for the broad strokes.

In this video we're looking at proper technique on several different shrug variations (barbell shrugs, dual cable shrugs, etc) to maximize muscular development of the upper traps while avoiding injury.

‣ I like this belt because it's very lightweight, easy to carry around and doesn't feel "bulky" at all around the waist while still doing its job. This belt isn't designed for high level powerlifters using max weight on squats and deadlifts (a lever belt is better for that - see below) however it is very convenient and effective. I use it mostly for exercises like bent rows, bench presses, shrugs, etc. however will also use it for squats and deadlifts, especially when travelling. If you're new to wearing a belt, this is probably the best place to get started because it is so comfortable.
