Avalanches are masses of snow, ice and rocks that fall quickly down the slope of a mountain from which it is very difficult to take refuge and, even more difficult, to be rescued.
Footage by Frank Mirbach accompanied by music from Ulli Bögershausen: "What's Left to Say".

Avalanches occur when huge blocks of snowfall off a mountain slope and break like broken glass as they run downhill.

If you get caught in an avalanche, try to get out of its way. Once the avalanche stops, it settles like concrete. So, moving after an avalanche has passed you over is almost impossible.
