Everyone's experience is different and there is no one size fits all solution to every obstacle. With that in mind, I want to share some thoughts on perfectionism.

The message in the video rests on the idea that we sometimes spend a long time resisting labels that we've used to ring-fence a number of traits that we dislike and then resist the label that it puts on us. There have been things about myself that when I've accepted to be true, I've found easier to integrate.

For a long time I didn't feel that I could finish a painting and I just gave up on them at some point. I did my best to accept that I would feel this way every time in a neutral and unfrustrated way. And that's pretty much how it went for some time.

At some point, my end-points in at least some paintings became clearer in a way that might not have happened as easily had I been pre-occupied with 'overcoming' it. Instead, over time my mental associations changed with the experience changed, along with my intuitive feel for the mediums involved. I recognised that time was a part of my process and it became an intense race against the clock. Speed and focus needed to be ramped up in an effort to chase something.

These days, even if I'm not happy with every painting, I sometimes find it easier to recognise when to step away. Similarly, I know that I have to start new projects before I feel that I'm ready to because the alternative is waiting for a sense of readyness that won't arrive.
