In Formula 1, the safety car is used when the Race Director wants to reduce speed for safety reasons, be it on account of an accident or adverse weather conditions.
The safety car was first used during the 1973 Canadian Grand Prix and was driven by former Canadian race car driver Eppie Wietzes, which is currently Bernd Mayländer.
