There are two ways to think about backlinks:

Google likes ranking websites with strong link profiles as a whole. Why? Because it's a single of authority and trust. In their (algorithm's) eyes, if other high-quality websites trust you, they should also.

Your goal should be to narrow the backlink gap between you and your competitors on the domain level.

2️⃣ Your quantity of backlinks on the page level

You need to acquire backlinks to all pages throughout your website. Examine how many backlinks your competitors have for the target keyword you want to rank for. Then work to narrow that gap on the page level.
