In this easy-to-understand 2-minute video, I explain the mechanism of action, indication, side effects and treatment duration of (typical and atypical) antipsychotic drugs, also known as neuroleptics. The principal indications for antipsychotic drugs are the management of schizophrenia both in the acute phase and as maintenance therapy, mania, delusional depression and behavioural disturbance in dementia. Medications available in this class include: Risperidone (Risperdal), Quetiapine (Seroquel), Olanzapine (Zyprexa), Ziprasidone (Zeldox), Paliperidone (Invega), Aripiprazole (Abilify) and Clozapine (Clozaril).
