Future pipeline workers are smoothly running a rig and making a drilling rig pipe connection to continue boring downward. When making a connection, the chain is spun loosely around the box section of the lower pipe which is held firmly in the slips. The pin of the upper pipe is stabbed or sometimes kicked into the box :). The chain is then flicked upwards around the upper joint (known as throwing the chain). Then the main driller pulls (with his machine) on the chain and the upper joint pin is spun into the box, making a tight connection. Many fingers have been lost by being caught under the chain. Nowadays there is a spinning function on the make-up/break-up tongs, much safer, and less dramatic. These new tubing tongs are seen at 6:14 in the video when a new set of pipes is put in place before the concrete pumping.
