Do You Know Boogie Woogie? Well there is a lot of improvisation in Boogie Woogie, but just like classical music, there are Boogie Woogie compositions.

Also, just like classical music that are used in piano exams, there are some non-classical piano pieces in exams - although not a lot.

Once you get past the Grade exams (1-8), the next one is ATCL (Trinity) which is the equivalent to the end of first year performance in a music degree. There is a set list to choose from, and 99% of them are classical - but in there is Boogie Woogie Llanoogie by Karl Jenkins.

All the diploma pieces have their own "hard" challenges - such as interpretation, style, finger complexity. In this one, the relentless tempo (220 BPM) and pace with repeating patterns needs consistency and stamina with dynamic changes in line with the style of Boogie Woogie. Oh yes, this is the actual recording that was submitted for my ATCL Piano Diploma Exam submission - this was at the end of about 30 minutes playing.

The comment was: "Though there was no discernible change of pace for the Paco piu mosso middle section, the performance was a tour de force of boogie-woogie playing, full of energy and stylistic understanding." - Basically, I should have sped up a little bit in the middle.
