Joining us in this latest video from Bob’s Watches is YouTube personality and watch enthusiast, Teddy Baldassare, who since 2014 has brought an entire community of watch lovers and collectors together through his innovative and educational videos that cover topics such as how to buy your first watch and what not to buy.

Teddy does not own many Rolex watches; however his first investment was a vintage Rolex Datejust 1601 with a steel case and grey dial. He later swapped it with another 1601 model - a two tone version with a gold bezel and a black dial. He then fell in love with the Rolex Explorer II for its GMT feature which he uses frequently while travelling around the world.
Teddy finds the white dial of the Explorer II incredibly appealing since it’s not a color that Rolex uses all that often. Its versatile 40mm size and value for money make it a universally appealing watch that Teddy likes for its understated elegance. Despite being a tool watch, the white dial mixes well with all forms of attire, allowing it to be worn on all occasions.

Whether purchasing a Rolex or any other luxury watch, Teddy underscores a few important tips on how to do this safely while being savvy.

1) Take your time
2) Buy from a reputable dealer
3) Compare a like-for-like
4) Enjoy parting with your money
5) Don’t tick off boxes – kit your lifestyle out with one or two watches

Teddy begins the conversation with Bob’s Watches Founder and CEO Paul Altieri by admitting that he has never purchased a watch in person before. His statement reflects the current watch-buying culture. His advice is to spend more time researching and utilizing online resources rather than purchasing a watch spontaneously. Slow things down by taking steps to avoid getting “trigger happy” while browsing online. Look at how one watch compares to another, research variations between models, and then go and try your watch on at a boutique of your choice. Allow your tastes to evolve naturally, as they always do, and enjoy the walk-in experience that a boutique has to offer. Know where to find the information first and know where to buy.

Paul reinforces Teddy’s point, adding that once you’ve done all your research, it’s crucial to buy from a trusted and reputable dealer. Comparing an authentic Rolex watch with a cheaper Rolex watch from an untrustworthy source is not a like-for-like comparison. The authenticity of a Rolex watch is paramount; it’s imperative to know and trust the seller.

Compare prices between one reputable dealer and another, but don’t always look for the absolute cheapest deal - sometimes spending a little more money up-front saves you a lot in the long run.

With that in mind, enjoy the watch buying experience. Fall in love with a timepiece, and if your heart has been set on a specific watch for some time, spend a little more on what you love and feel good about your purchase. Money invested in a passion is money well-spent.

The beauty of purchasing a Rolex watch is that they hold their value. It gives you that added reassurance when buying a Rolex that you can’t make any huge mistakes. Should you ultimately decide you want a different model, you can easily achieve this by doing a trade-in or selling it for close to what you paid for it.

Teddy closes the conversation by explaining that building a Rolex watch collection is like kitting out your lifestyle - one or two watches can be your ultimate collection by each fulfilling a number of different tasks and uses.
Don’t focus on ticking off boxes - you don’t need one of everything. And lastly, don’t buy into hype. Spend as much as you can to ensure that you end up with something you are going to be happy wearing.
