What is child welfare abolition
The abolition of child welfare is the idea that the state should be very interventionist in the lives of children. Critics argue that the current child welfare program, especially in low-income neighborhoods, often leads to unnecessary removals of children from their homes and fails to adequately support families in many instances. Abolition conceptualizes that such a framework needs to be substituted with the help of communities for solutions through the provision of services that may emphasize prevention instead of punishment, mental health supports, stability of housing, and economic support. Abolitionists who wish to eradicate child welfare consider this resolution for the systemic inequalities within society; hence, abolition seeks to put forth solutions that promote equity in order to create just environments for every child and their families.
