This week, we visit a refreshingly different HDB home in Canberra. Homeowners Shaun and Michelle were inspired after staying at a popular tropical brutalist resort in Bali (The Slow) and really liked the raw yet warm vibes that they wanted to take back home. It's a recent trend, but tropical brutalism has been gaining traction as while the raw concrete vibes are something many people like, that cold and bare finishing makes the space feel somewhat less homely - and the inclusion of plants goes a long way to making it warmer and feeling like a home.

There are many details in their home, but the first that you'd notice is the concrete wind blocks as you enter the apartment. It's a good screen for some privacy, yet open so that the space still feels spacious. These blocks were made by hand in the factory and specially measured as well to fit in the live-edged timber table.

Shaun and Michelle also wanted an open plan kitchen with an island, and opted for open shelving as well despite the fact that it required more maintenance! The wind blocks design actually flows through into the bedroom as well, as it acts as a backdrop to the vanity area. The master bathroom also employs fluted glass to create a more open nature to the bedroom too.
