Brown Bears & Wolves hunt Salmon at NIGHT at Brooks Falls! Watch on infrared cam. Katmai, Alas
The falls platform is closed between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. from June 15 to August 15 so that bears and other animals have the opportunity to fish for salmon without people nearby.
Infrared light (which bears and other mammals cannot see) allows our cameras to observe Brooks Falls at night.
Salmon often continue their migration and spawning efforts under the cover of darkness.
In the plunge pools below Brooks Falls, bears fish for salmon by feel. But on the lip of the falls, bears continue to rely on their eyesight throughout the darkest hours to catch salmon.
The eyes of bears and wolves are better adapted to see at night compared to humans.
Like bears, wolves throughout Katmai National Park fish for salmon.
Nighttime can offer wolves the chance to fish with fewer bears nearby and no people to disturb them.
