Beijing reopens schools, Shanghai wins Covid | China News | NewsRme
Beijing will enable primary and secondary schools to resume in-person lessons, while Shanghai's senior party leader claimed triumph against Covid after the city reported zero new cases for the first time in two months.
Shanghai imposed a two-month citywide lockdown that ended on June 1 to limit the spread of the Omicron wave from March to May.
The actions, part of China's zero-Covid strategy to eliminate all outbreaks, have reduced case counts, but the heavy-handed methods have stoked resentment and even occasional demonstrations and hurt the economy.
Beijing closed its schools in early May due to an increase of locally transmitted Covid cases. Seniors in middle and high school returned June 2.
All primary and secondary school pupils in the capital may return to in-person courses on Monday, the education commission announced Saturday. Kindergartens reopen July 4.
The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports stated young people may continue non-school sports on June 27 in regions where no community instances have been documented for seven days, except for basement venues.
