When I describe a watercolour wash I'm referring to the paint that runs with gravity as the water moves across the page, leaving a translucent pigment behind. It's been some time since I last mixed colours on a pallete or used brushes to apply paint to the paper. A watercolour wash would normally be achieved including both of these techniques and so my use of the term might seem odd here. If it's bothersome, feel free to consider it used colloquially and not technically.
