Arima Onsen can be found north of Kobe city. We just so happened to arrive during what could only be called Japan's second rainy season. You might think that that would ruin the trip, but it had quite the opposite effect. It became all the more special for it. When so much of what makes Arima Onsen beautiful is how green it is coupled with its central river and vertical cliffs spotted with buildings grown over with vines, it's the perfect environment for a heavy rain. Once everything was wet all the green became an even richer saturation creating contrast with everything around it. The verticality that all the hotels and homes had looked especially epic as you were forced to crane your neck and look upwards to appreciate them as the rain poured down. Ever more perfect was to arrive to Kobe after our filming and have the clouds finally clear so that we were able to enjoy an electric bike ride along the harbour. Made all the clearer for the rain having swept away any particulate that may have been in the air before. Come be soothed and enjoy this cinematic vision of a drowned kingdom in the rain.
