Detailed first look at the New 2023 Honda Civic Type R FL5
Welcome to our detailed first-look / walkaround of the new Honda Civic Type R, better known as the FL5. We say FL5 because Civic R people talk in codes. The first R was the EK9 in 1997 - one we didn't get in the UK - but the rest were British made Type Rs (EP3, FN2, FK2 and outgoing FK8). The FK8 was launched in 2017 and it drove incredibly well, but it looked embarrassing. Styling was (to Jonny) full of paste-on fake vents, winglets and immature fuss.
This new FL5 Civic comes as a hybrid only in non R form, but evolves the K20 2.0 Vtec turbo. It is styled as a lower, wider, more composed Civic. The R looks revolutionary, but its underpinnings are an evolution of the previous car. Honda haven't confirmed many specs, so we need to speculate; for this we recruited an expert opinion… Cue Phil Crafford. Phil is a (huge) Civic Type R aficionado and runs Civic tuning house Dream Automotive in Luton. He combed through the car as we filmed it, mostly with a view to modifying it – which should be interesting 😉
