For too long we have been told property is the path to wealth. It's not. Today I would argue it's even possibly a trap for young people and for sure at best the old way some people made money.
Many will say that they bought a property for $200,000 15 years ago and today it's worth $1.2 million but that does not mean a young person should buy a $1.2 million property now and hope for the same or even care about this fact.
History has shown that most of the very wealthy actually did not make their original money from property. Founders of Facebook, Google, Amazon and TikTok are good examples of that. They may have bought property later once they made money but they keep themselves light on cost in the early years of their life so they could instead invest in a business or an idea.
I believe the advice to young people and pressure to get on the property ladder is wrong. We need to talk the pressure off the next generation and instead allow them to focus on something more important in these years, such as finding your purpose and therefore ensuring a fulfilling life.
Owning a property ≠ happy. Let's not suggest this generation try to repeat the past and instead offer a new route to wealth where success is measured not in your property portfolio but in your day-to-day enjoyment of life.
