The United States invasion of Panama in late 1989 was an intervention carried out with the aim to maintain Washington's dominance in Latin America. Among other countries in the region, Panama was of particular importance to the United States. It was primarily because of the Panama Canal that connects the Atlantic with the Pacific Ocean and was significant for both American military and economic interests.
