After narrowly escaping some serious trouble with a snap hook opening tee shot Ian Poulter recovered really well to shoot a -3 (69) with the highlight of the day a 150 foot eagle putt on the short par 4, 9th hole that put him on top of the leaderboard at that point.
A sticky back 9 with bogeys on the par 3, 11th & par 5, 14th were balanced with birdies on 12 & 18 to leave him with a brilliant chance of playing 4 rounds for the first & last time in a while.
A bit of a barbed post round interview though, with the awaiting press looking to ask him about the vocal boos at the 1st tee & heckling throughout the rest of the round.
He says he didn't hear a thing, but I'm not sure that's really the case.
He's in a great spot after round one though.
