Former Labor Senator Stephen Conroy says Anthony Albanese's overseas travels are important to send the message Australia stands with western democracies against "unjustified invasions".

The Prime Minister will fly to Paris tonight ahead of a meeting with the French President Emmanuel Macron.

"We have some of the most serious geopolitical complex situations that we've faced in 30 years," Mr Conroy told Sky News Australia.

"We need to send a strong message to China that the world is now watching China and its behaviour – it's China that made the decision to align with Russia no one made them."
