Thai capital Bangkok to hold first governor election in nine years
Bangkok is holding its first election for governor in almost 10 years, after previous ballots were suspended by Thailand’s 2014 military coup. Some 4.4 million Bangkok residents will be eligible to vote on Sunday (May 22). Bangkok is the only city that gets to elect its own governor. All other governors in Thailand are appointed. Observers said this result will provide critical clues to how Thailand’s general elections due next year could turn out. 31 people have stepped forward to run this time -- the most number of candidates ever -- but two have been disqualified.
