The Asmat people have widely been labelled cannibals, headhunters, and savages. And in 1961, they became notorious for the disappearance of Michael Rockefeller, member of one of the wealthiest families in the United States.
Photographer Joshua Irwandi managed to gain unprecedented access to the community. He tells us about the tribe and its struggles.
In 2020, Irwandi took a photograph of a corpse wrapped in plastic. Posted on Instagram, the image went viral. He tells us about the truth behind his famous image.
