Dr. Rena D. Malik is Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Urology and Director of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She previously completing medical school at NYU School of Medicine followed by urologic residency training at the University of Chicago and fellowship at University of Texas at Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in reconstructive urology including the management of female and male voiding dysfunction, urinary incontinence, vaginal and robotic surgery for pelvic organ prolapse, overactive bladder, neurogenic bladder, male and female urethral stricture, vesicovaginal fistula, urethral diverticulum, and mesh-related complications. She is currently a member of the American Urological Association (AUA), the Mid-Atlantic Section of the AUA, the Society of Women in Urology, and the Association for Women Surgeons. She is also the social media chair for the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) and serves on the communications committee for the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS). She served as the spokesperson for bladder health month for the AUA Radio Media tour in 2019 and has been featured on SiriusXM Doctor Radio Men’s Health Show. She regularly hosts podcasts for SUFU and AWS and has been a guest on the AUAUniversity, AUA Inside Tract, and Incision UK Podcasts. Dr. Malik is regularly featured by media outlets such as US News & World Report, MSN, and Bustle and has an active YouTube channel providing education on common urologic conditions. She was awarded Top Doctor 2019 by Baltimore Magazine for Urology and Urogynecology. She has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Her research interests include gender disparities, health literacy, and medical misinformation in social media. Dr. Bahlani graduated magna cum laude with an undergraduate degree and then went on to receive her Doctor of Medicine degree from the Virginia Commonwealth School of Medicine in Richmond, VA. She completed her residency in OB/GYN at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. After her residency, Dr. Bahlani joined the Smith Institute following a fellowship in the department of urology under the mentorship Dr. Robert Moldwin, a leader and innovator in the field of pelvic pain. After 7 years in academics, Dr. Bahlani went on to start her own private practice in mid-town Manhattan. As the 2014 recipient of the Marinoff Career Development Award from the National Vulvodynia Association, Dr. Bahlani has been able to continue her clinical and research interests in the treatment of vulvodynia and sexual pain. She’s been invited to present her research at multiple conferences, including the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists and the American Urologic Association.
Dr. Bahlani’s specialized training allows her to treat patients with urologic and gynecologic pelvic pain syndromes, such as vulvodynia, pelvic floor dysfunction, interstitial cystitis, vulvar dermatoses and female sexual dysfunction. As a clinician, as well as through her continual pursuit of knowledge and research, Dr. Bahlani always strives to achieve her ultimate goal of enabling women to spend less time in pain and gain the tools they need to live their lives to the fullest.
