For the barbed wire, I use very fine wire, 32 gauge and twist it using a drill. It’s not exactly barbed wire but it give the illusion of being barbed wire when view from a short distance on the layout.

It’s only a small detail for your model railroad layout but they look quite good when made in large numbers. It’s most suited to HO scale however it can be applied to many other scales and its not just limited to model train layouts, it’s also very usable for war gaming terrain and other military modelling or whatever.
