ABOUT THIS PROJECT
===============================
Ground squirrels are considered to have significant impacts on the grassland ecosystems they inhabit, meaning they may be considered keystone species. They are also an important prey species for many terrestrial predators and birds of prey and can even help to slow the spread of invasive plant species.

This rewilding project is part of our effort to maximise the impact of our members by supporting the conservation of species that have a big impact on their ecosystems.

The European ground squirrel has declined across its range and it’s now listed as endangered on the IUCN red list. Much of their habitat has been lost and fragmented and they now exist as only a few isolated populations in Slovakia.

One of the main threats to the long-term survival of these populations is a lack of food. Seeds, fruits and insects are becoming increasingly hard to find in their human-modified landscapes.

To prevent this from happening we are supporting Broz to restore the grassland habitat of these endangered squirrels. We kicked things off by supplementary feeding ground squirrels with sunflower seeds this spring. We also installed nest boxes in the area to support small local bird and mammal populations in the hope of reducing the natural predation pressure on the ground squirrels. In the long term, we will be planting wild European crab apple and wild pear trees to provide a regular and reliable supply of nutritious fruit for the ground squirrels.

A big thank you to all Mossy Earth members for making this project possible.
