The 2021 Isuzu D-Max is available in four model grades – SX, LS-M, LS-U and X-Terrain – and three body styles: single cab, space cab and double cab.

The previous base model, the $26,990 drive-away SX single cab-chassis 4x2 with “low rider” suspension (and which only had a 2.5-tonne towing capacity) has been deleted.

The new line-up starts from $29,990 drive-away for the SX single cab-chassis 4x2 with “high rider” suspension, which has a 3.5-tonne towing capacity.

The previous flagship Isuzu D-Max LS-T (available as a 4x2 or 4x4) has been deleted; in its place is the new top-of-the-range X-Terrain double cab (4x4 only), albeit with a higher price (see separate story here).

As reported extensively in our safety coverage, every model in the new 2021 Isuzu D-Max line-up comes with the full suite of advanced technology. However, there are other key differences as you climb through the model range.

Under the bonnet is a new 3.0-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder. Only the conrods carry over from the previous 3.0-litre.

Power and torque have increased to 140kW and 450Nm. This is still a lower output than most of the D-Max’s key rivals, however the engine – also used in delivery trucks – is said to be under-stressed. Isuzu says peak torque is broader than before, with 400Nm available from just 1400rpm.

Maximum towing capacity remains 3500kg, however it’s now across all models, including the basic tradie version that we’ve dubbed the ‘traffic controller’ thanks to its popularity in work zones.

Hardcore four-wheel-drive fans will be pleased to know there is finally a rear differential lock as standard on all 4WD versions.

The rear suspension remains a three-leaf spring design – whereas most ute rivals have five-leaf rear springs.
