WE’RE IN PESHAWAR PAKISTAN! This ancient city is a STREET FOOD paradise, and is known for it’s incredibly friendly people and amazing hospitality! We have returned to the Qissa Khwani Bazaar to EAT Pakistani food!

Just next to the Kabuli Gate, we instantly found our breakfast. This street food stall was serving Peshawari Pulao, which is a dish that originates from Afghanistan. There is rice, beef, chick peas, raisins and a rich broth which are steamed and mixed together to form a delicious blend of pulao. The vendors also added a generous amount of beef bone marrow to our plate. WOW!

Next, we wanted to wash down the amazing pulao with Kahwa Tea, the staple drink of Peshawar and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province. It is a sweet green tea made in these iconic teapots. Cardamom is crushed and added to the teapot and the result is a fragrant and light cup of Kahwa. We also ordered milk tea to try and it was equally sweet and light. We loved the Kahwa so much that we decided to shop around the Qissa Khwani Bazaar to find our own tea leaves and teapot to bring back home with us.

For lunch, we visited the world-famous Nisar Charsi Tikka restaurant, to try the highly recommended Charsi Tikka and Dumba Karahi. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into, but we were excited. You enter through their butcher section. We were impressed by how clean it was and how carefully the meat is handled and carved. We soon met the owner, Nisar, who explained to us the meaning of the word “Charsi”. Charsi roughly translates to stoner. There was definitely something potent in the air, and many patrons were getting the munchies!

Nisar also proclaimed that his dishes are always A-ONE and the very best in the world. “PAKISTAN ZINDABAD” echoed proudly through his kitchen while we watched the preparation of Peshawari Karahi and Tikka. The karahi is cooked with tender lamb and fatty tail bone, lamb lard, tomatoes, and chili pepper. We also ordered lamb chops they were cooked over smokey coals to perfection. The chefs were proud to only use salt as their seasoning, to focus on and emphasize the natural flavours of the meat. While waiting for our meal to arrive, we were invited to a nearby house to share jaggery and tea with some “babas”. They were very kind and gifted us with a green gemstone. The food was absolutely delicious, the experience was very fun and we loved chatting with Nisar Khan!

Since we were SUPER stuffed from lamb chops and karahi, we decided to do a little more shopping in Peshawar. Just down the street in the Namak Mandi Market, we stopped by Cha Cha Noor Din Kaptaan Chappal to shop for Peshwari chappals. Chappals are traditional sandals from Peshawar, and are handmade from leather. They are known to be very comfortable and stylish. You can have them custom made, or browse the shop’s infinite styles and colours.
