BYD has made lots of noise about its assault on the Australian market and now we have the first tangible evidence of it.

As the fledgling Chinese EV brand’s first full-time model Down Under, the 2022 BYD Atto 3 is a small electric SUV aimed directly at the battery-powered version of Australia’s top-selling small SUV, the MG ZS.

So much so that it lands at the same $44,990 drive-away price as the MG ZS EV, at least until the $2000-pricier upgraded ZS EV arrives in coming weeks – at which point the Atto 3 will become the nation’s cheapest EV.

We can’t give you the verdict on what will be a pivotal model for the ambitious Chinese car-maker until we drive the first right-hand drive local-spec version of the Atto 3 on Aussie roads soon.

But as Ali Lawrence found out in our first local taste-test, the 2022 BYD Atto 3 looks pretty promising.
