This FitnessFAQs video teaches the problem with push-ups. Flared elbows is the most common mistake. This happens due to a lack of strength or poor technique. The next problem is arching the lower back. A downside with push-ups is core fatigue, maintaining posture is challenging during long sets. On overhead exercises such as pike pushups or handstand push-ups, extending the lower back means something different. We arch during overhead pressing as a compensation through recruiting the pecs. Weighted push-ups are a challenging exercise. Having a weight plate on the back is a big mistake. This method impedes scapula motion, requires a partner and is difficult to load heavy. Heavy push-ups are possible using a dip belt as covered in this calisthenics tutorial.
