Grand Seiko has risen to challenge Swiss powerhouses like Rolex, Omega, and Breitling. Despite production that amounts to only 45,000 watches per year, Grand Seiko rivals the Swiss majors with a compelling combination of style, value, and innovation. Today’s show features two outstanding Seiko empire offering; one from Grand Seiko, and one from Credor.

The Grand Seiko Automatic GMT for Hodinkee – better known as the SBGM239 – is a 2020 limited edition of 500 pieces in stainless steel. Its 39.5mm case shines mirror bright thanks to the Japanese watchmaker’s signature “Zaratsu” tin-plate polishing technique. The “twilight” blue dial incorporates hand-finished hands and indices, and the bracelet imparts an impression of solidity. The dual-time watch includes independent 12 and 24-hour time zones, and a Grand Seiko manufacture caliber 9S66 winds automatically while providing a 72-hour power reserve.

Rarely seen outside Japan, the Credor watch brand is a second luxury label that runs in parallel with and occasionally surpasses the opulence of Grand Seiko. Today’s Japanese domestic market (JDM) Credor Spring Drive GCLP995 is a 38mm stainless steel dress watch for the Japanese home market. Its full steel bracelet features the same intricate finish as the case and dial, both of which exude effortless elegance. A double-digit date graces the dial along with a discreet power reserve indicator, and a rare manual wind Seiko Spring Drive caliber – 7R87 – offers high style, exacting precision, and 48 hours of power reserve.

Patek Philippe watches offer immense refinement, rarity, and lasting value. But today’s Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot 5522A is a rarity among rarities with only 600 pieces made. This 42mm stainless steel pilot’s watch was release exclusively in the United States marketplace to commemorate the 2017 Patek Philippe Grand Exposition in New York City.
