Slovenia has a lot to offer geographically: in the west the rocky Adriatic coast, in the east the fertile Pannonian plain, in the north an alpine high mountain range and in the south unique caves in the karst. The lively and innovative capital Ljubljana lies in the middle of this small country. In addition to its decorative historical facades, it has also retained its tranquil charm. Slovenia's special places can be reached quickly from Ljubljana.

High in the Julian Alps in the Triglav National Park, Marko Pretner explains the traditional walking stick technique that only a few people still master. Karstologists and speleologists restore old paths through the underground canyons and explain why too many visitors damage the underground ecosystem.

In Lipica, the world-famous Lipizzaner horses trot and gallop on a historic stud farm. A world and European champion throws himself into the white water course of the Soca in a kayak. And in Piran on the Adriatic coast, biologist and businesswoman Irena Fonda explains how a small, sustainable fish farm benefits the sea.

The deepest gorge in Europe, the continent's last primeval forests, important cultural sites and a unique diversity of species - just two hours' flight from Germany lies an area of spectacular natural phenomena full of undiscovered beauty. The five-part documentary series ""The Balkan Express"" is a visually stunning voyage of discovery through mysterious landscapes and untouched wilderness in the middle of Europe.
