Prior to the mid-1800s, golf balls were smooth and didn't travel very far in the air. The current design of a dimple-shaped ball reduces the air flow around the ball. Typically, golf balls have between 300 to 500 dimples. This helps them to fly twice as far as its smooth counterparts.
