The new, fourth-generation Nissan X-Trail has taken quite some time to make it to Australia – the US-market version was revealed in June 2020 – but it’s finally just around the corner.

Due to arrive in dealers during the second half of 2022, Nissan Australia has provided some details around the specification breakdown to expect from its Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5 and Mitsubishi Outlander competitor.

The new-generation Nissan X-Trail will come in four familiar specification grades, called ST, ST-L, Ti and Ti-L. All are slightly wider and taller than before, meaning the Nissan will remain one of the larger vehicles in its class.

All will be powered by a petrol engine and all will get more driver-assist safety features than ever before; far more modern interior displays than the dated current car; and available new features such as a centre-opening console, wireless charger, and splash-free wipers.

Underneath the entirely redesigned body, the X-Trail uses the same Renault-Nissan Alliance CMF-C platform as the new Mitsubishi Outlander, which hit the market last year.

It runs the same 2.5-litre petrol four-cylinder with 135kW of power and 245Nm of torque, up 9kW and 19Nm over the outgoing model, mated to a CVT automatic. Towing capacity is up 500kg, to a claimed 2000kg with a braked trailer.

The available all-wheel drive (AWD) system will have Eco, Standard and Sports driving modes, plus dial-controlled traction modes that tweak power delivery and traction control to work better on bitumen, direct, ice or snow. There’s also a hill descent-control system.

Nissan is also promoting the ‘twin-board’ adjustable-floor cargo area with a claimed 16 different configurations, while seven seats will be an option on “some grades” as before – though Nissan hasn’t given specifics.
