Tornadoes kill about 70 people and cause $400 million in damage every year in the U.S., mostly within Tornado Alley — a region in the southern central part of the nation where the majority of the world’s tornadoes occur.

The threats of tornadoes are sudden, in part because we depend on human eyesight to confirm when a tornado has touched ground. But vision isn’t the only way to detect the violent vortices. Sound may be the key.

A team of scientists at the University of Mississippi’s National Center for Physical Acoustics has spent years studying how acoustic sensors can be used to “hear” tornadoes through infrasound.

The technology, originally developed to detect nuclear explosions, could improve the speed and accuracy of tornado warning systems, helping to save lives and give scientists new insights into the conditions that produce the extreme phenomenon.

Director’s note: 4:07 -5:10
“I grew up in Florida with frequent hurricanes. Hurricanes are scary, but you very much know they’re coming. To me, the idea that tornadoes can appear out of nowhere, with no warning, has always been so unfathomable. When Roger told me that his team’s never had a false alarm tracking tornados with this technology, I knew we had to film with them in Mississippi and give this stuff a closer look. When covering scientific research of any kind, it’s rare that you get 100 percent assurance on anything. The team is confident this system works, has seen it working, and is just trying to get it out there for people.”
