The January 6 hearings have been explosive - for Trump, the Republicans and Democrats, and even democracy itself. They could change the way American politics works completely, but maybe not in the way you'd imagine.

The hearings revealed that Trump thought about seizing voting machines, having fake officials hand him the election, and nearly replaced the entire justice department to make sure he won. And then threw his food all over the wall when his allies wouldn’t go along with his plan.

And that was before January 6 itself even happened.

Even the day after the Capitol riots, as he filmed a message for the public, he couldn't bring himself to say the election was over.

Trump denies all the accusations - he says the J6 committee is a witch hunt - but whichever way you look at it, the testimony has been shocking.

The big question though, is what changes now?

The US is completely split along party lines - so does attacking Trump really change Republican minds? Are the hearings just a way of stoking the Democrat base to vote in the midterms?

Or - and here’s the potential plot twist - will the hearings actually backfire for the Democrats and make the Republicans choose someone more electable in 2024?
