Near our planting area, in the Southern Carpathian mountains, we found the most bizarre sight. A forest completely flattened by the wind. We decided to go and check out the area and see what we could find.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Upon further research, we found some coverage on Romanian news that dug into the forces behind this strange event.

It seems that during a particularly cold winter storm a front with very cold air moved into the area where it met the relatively warmer air above the forests and the impact between these two air masses is what created the disaster.

The resulting event can best be described on the ground as something similar to a tornado. A very fast event with winds reaching speeds of up to 220km per hour.

The official reports estimate more than 50 000 trees fell down. While the loggers are removing some of the deadwood there is nothing to be done for this area however we would love to have the opportunity to restore it in the future as it’s only a few kilometers from our own project area.
