In Porto Alegre, POA, in the Moinhos de Vento neighborhood, I walked through Parque Moinhos de Vento (ParCão) and also known streets like Rua Padre Chagas, Rua Dinarte Ribeiro, Rua Félix da Cunha.

CURRENT FEATURES
Upscale neighborhood, Moinhos has been significantly modified in recent years, through the construction of many residential buildings and with the great expansion of commerce. Precisely because of its attraction for investment, debates have taken place concerning the preservation of old mansions in the neighborhood and their replacement by other more modern buildings.

In the early 2000s, a shopping center named after the neighborhood was built, Moinhos Shopping, integrated into the city's first international five-star hotel, the Sheraton Hotel Porto Alegre. Although small compared to other shopping centers, it is home to more than 100 high-end stores. In March 2012, the land for the mall and the hotel was acquired by Grupo Zaffari for R$ 220 million reais.

Like other streets in the city, the streets of Moinhos de Vento are usually heavily wooded, and some of them fall within the precepts of the "Green Tunnel Law", created to protect roads in this category.

Moinhos de Vento is also home to Avenida Goethe and Rua Fernando Gomes, known as the "Walk of Fame". Both have attractions of the Porto Alegre nightlife, such as bars and restaurants. Another popular street in the neighborhood is Rua Padre Chagas, with several bars, restaurants and luxury brand stores. Another street that stands out for its commerce is Rua Vinte e Quatro de Outubro.

Inaugurated in 1972, the Parque Moinhos de Vento, popularly called "Parcão", is frequented for the practice of exercises, in addition to being the setting for several cultural attractions. Next to the park's lake, there is a replica of an Azorean mill where there is a children's library.

COST OF LIVING
According to the IBGE 2010 Census, Moinhos de Vento is the neighborhood that concentrates the largest number of elderly people in the city: about 26.9% of its residents fit this profile.

A survey carried out by Exame/Ibope in 2011 revealed that Moinhos de Vento is the most expensive neighborhood in Porto Alegre. According to the study, properties in the neighborhood experienced a considerable increase in their prices compared to the previous year. The value per square meter was BRL 12,207 for properties considered "new" and BRL 14,065 for "used" properties.

In another study, focusing on the most expensive and valued streets in the city, it was found out of the thirteen listed addresses, five corresponded to some streets in Moinhos de Vento. The first positioned was Rua Marquês do Herval, due to recent high-end launches. Then came Rua Dinarte Ribeiro for concentrating part of the bars and cafes, among other businesses. Soon after, Rua Engenheiro Álvaro Nunes Pereira was positioned, where the largest apartments in the Capital are located, with more than 800 m² of floor space. The other streets mentioned were Santo Inácio, Barão de Santo Ângelo and Luciana de Abreu.

STORY

The Moinhos de Vento neighborhood was named after the Caminhos dos Moinhos de Vento (which, from 1939 onwards, was renamed Rua Vinte e Quatro de Outubro) and which had mills brought by the Azorean families who settled there and planted and milled wheat.

The neighborhood's growth was boosted in 1893, with the implementation by Companhia Carris of the Independencia tram line. The opening of Prado Independência, in 1894, was another factor that contributed to the progress of the neighborhood. In 1959, the meadow was transferred to the Cristal district, and was renamed Hipódromo do Cristal, and the Grêmio FOOT-Ball Portoalegrense stadium until 1954, which came to be the Parque Moinhos de Vento - (the "Parcão") - which has become the biggest attraction of the region.

The construction of the Hydraulic Moinhos de Vento, in 1904, led to the opening of several streets in its vicinity.

On the border with the Independência neighborhood, the German Hospital was inaugurated in 1927, which, from 1942 onwards, due to the Second World War, was renamed Hospital Moinhos de Vento.

From 1961 to 1994, Moinhos de Vento had a "street cinema" called Cine Coral, originally created as "Cine Moinhos de Vento". This space operated on the ground floor of a building on Avenida Vinte e Quatro de Outubro, in front of Parcão, until the day it closed its doors due to competition with shopping malls. In July 2012, there was a mobilization of dozens of people interested in revitalizing the space of the former Cine Coral and creating a theater or a cultural center for the neighborhood.
