To create this Iraq series, I teamed up with my guides at Bil Weekend (https://www.instagram.com/bilweekend/ | https://bilweekend.com/) and my good friend and fellow travel filmmaker Tasos Karantakos (https://www.instagram.com/agreeksolo).
My time in southern Iraq continued with a traditional Iraqi breakfast and exploration of Basra’s old city and a local market. Come with me and let me show you what Basra is all about!
AL HASSUN RESTAURANT AND MUSEUM: Here, we saw the museum, which is filled with lots of antiques, before watching the chef, Hidar, cook us three amazing dishes. We had sweet and savory fried eggs with dibis (date syrup), makhlama (lamb omelet), and kubba (fritters stuffed with minced lamb).
OLD CITY OF BASRA: After breakfast, we visited the Old City, which is made up of lots of old homes and buildings. It’s currently being restored by UNESCO. We got exclusive access to a large, beautiful home undergoing restoration!
BASRA MARKET: In the local market, we met lots of friendly vendors selling everything from sweets to produce to fresh fish. I bought a new turban, tried an amazing local lime juice called Numi Al-Basra, and got to see local butchers selling and cutting meat and seafood.
