It’s Porsche’s 75th birthday. Which means you need two things: a birthday present and a big party. Thankfully, Porsche has done both.

The present? A $1,046,000 limited edition toy for Porsche’s very luckiest – and track-savvy – customers: the 911 GT3 R rennsport. Put simply, it’s the ‘logical’ successor to the GT2 RS-based 935 from a few years back, and uses the already potent 911 GT3 R as a base. Aside from the bonnet and the roof, every other body panel on the limited edition has been changed over a not-at-all-regular GT3 R.

Where was it revealed? Porsche’s birthday bash at Laguna Seca: Rennsport Reunion. As dos go, it was a good one. A four-day festival for everything Porsche. The place was dripping with so much extraordinary metal that even something like a 959 frankly became a bit average after our fourth day here. There were 908s, 917s, 910s, 956s, 962s, RSRs, an entire tent stuffed full of beautiful 356s, vintage 911s, modern 911s and, this being California, enough lowered and modified 911s to give Porsche’s compliance department a coronary. And don’t worry if you couldn’t make it, as Top Gear Magazine’s Tom Ford made the trip across the pond to bring you all the action.
