This is VR 360 5K Japan Explorer. We explore many places in Japan.

We introduce Pontocho at night.

Pontocho is located between Kamogawa and Kiyamachi Street in the center of Kyoto. Pontocho is not actually named after a place, but rather a long, narrow street about 500m north to south. It was developed as a Hanamachi street in the early Edo period (1603-1868) when the Kamo River was being reinforced. In addition to traditional restaurants, there are also restaurants on both sides of Pontocho Street. Not only tourists but also the locals use this street as a place for banquets and entertainment. It is one of the five Hanamachi districts in Kyoto, and you can see maiko and geiko walking down the street. Every year in May, "Kamo-gawa Odori" is performed at Pontocho Opera House. It is a representative event of Pontocho and consists of a dance play in the first part and a dance show of maiko in the second part.

Origin of the name of Pontocho
There are several theories, but the most common theory is that the name was derived from the Portuguese word ponto (meaning "tip"), which means "the edge of the land facing the Kamo River. Another theory is that the location between the Kamo River and the Takase River makes it look like a drum made of two pieces of leather, and the name comes from the sound of a banging drum.

Even though it is located near the downtown area of Shijo-Kawaramachi, from the moment you enter the street, it is filled with the typical Kyoto atmosphere.

Even if it is not the season for the Kamo River dance festival, just walking along this mysterious street will instantly make you feel like you are in Kyoto. The traditional machiya-style architecture, relaxing norms, lanterns, and stone pavement is perfect for a short walk. If you're lucky, you might be able to meet a maiko. You must visit the street.

We will introduce tourist attractions in Japan on VR360.
Even if you can't come to sightseeing, we will make a video so that you can enjoy the feeling of sightseeing.
