Swat wood carving was once a thriving craft in Swat Valley in Pakistan. The artistry dates back 2,000 years to the Buddhist period of the Gandhara region. But many shops shut down when the Taliban occupied the region in 2007. The Mustaan family fled Swat and established a new store in Lahore.

Editor's note: A previous version of this video stated that Swati carving dates back 2,000 years in Pakistan. The video also said Zarshal was one of the few authentic wood-carving shops left. We’ve corrected the mistakes, and added more details about the origins of the art. We apologize for the errors.
